September update for Knox County!

***On Tuesday, August 16th I had the honor of speaking at the Knox County Young Republicans Club. Thanks to everyone that joined us.

***On Wednesday, September 7th I was the guest speaker at the College Republicans Club on the University of Tennessee campus in the Howard Baker Jr. Center. What a great crowd! And  many volunteered to help our campaign. These young men and woman are our future.

***Tuesday, August 30th I joined others to raise funds for East Tennessee Children's Hospital  on "The Star of Knoxville" riverboat with the "Cards for Kids." It was a fun night! Thanks to my supporters who made us the top fundraiser!

***As a member of the Knox County Parks and Recreation Board I was glad to see us break ground on the new Plumb Creek Park in August. 

***Tennessee football is in full swing with two home games coming up...Ohio University this Saturday and Florida the next Saturday. At the Battle at Bristol my son Chad and I enjoyed seeing Peyton Manning and NASCAR great Rusty Wallace.

 

***On Tuesday, September 20th, I will be the host at Tennova's Senior Day lunchtime performance at the Dixie Stampede. All seniors are invited. There will be a Wellness Expo before the show. Doors open 11:00am.

***Friday Night Lights! Many of you know I narrated the film, Friday Night Lights as "Slammin' Sammy Stands,"...well Friday night, September 30th I will be the stadium announcer at Central High School's football game. I did one game last year and I enjoyed seeing a lot of old friends and meeting many new ones. I appreciate being invited back.

In Commission news...


On Monday, September19th at 5:00pm, the Knox County Commission will hold its monthly workshop in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building. Psst! At 4:30p we will be shooting the new group photo!

On Monday, September 26th at 1pm the Knox County Pension and Retirement Board will meet on the 6th floor of the City County Building in the Commission Conference Room. I am on that board and will be present. Also that day, the Knox County Commission Beer Board will meet at 4pm. The regular Commission will begin at 5pm followed by Zoning at 7pm. All meetings will take place in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building.



The bulk of the items that are coming before Commission for August are from two departments: 41 school resolutions (merely a formality as they pass whether we vote for them or not) and 8 from Engineering and Public Works. There are four zoning issues this month. Some resolutions that stand out are:
1. Contract for the building of sidewalks at Powell Middle School
2. Consideration of approving state aid in resurfacing Brushy Valley Road at I-75 with $530,082 paid by TDOT and $10,818 from Knox County.
3. Consideration of accepting a federal grant of $183,457 for the Knox County Department of Air Quality
4. Consideration of transferring ownership of 45 acres of county property know as Meads Quarry to Ijams Nature Center.

Here's the August update for Knox County!

***On Wednesday, August 17th the August Ed & Bob NIGHT OUT in Knox County will be 5-7p at Love That BBQ, 1901 Maryville Pike in South Knox County. Come out and meet your Commissioners and have some of the best BBQ ever!


***On Tuesday, August 16th I have the honor of speaking at the Knox County Young Republicans Club. It starts at 6:30 at the Chick-fil-A at 4944 Kingston Pike in Bearden.  Come out and say hello!


***On Thursday, August 18th the final Third Thursday Concerts at New Harvest Park starts at 6:30p with the Blue J's followed by Mae Beth Harris at 7:30. I will be there along with WIVK's Jimmy Holt from the Andy & Allison Show as the MC. The park is located at 4775 New Harvest Lane off Washington in Northeast Knox County. Come out and hear some great music and it's all FREE!


It was my honor to speak at the 2nd Annual Ride and Decide Recognition Luncheon. Great career job opportunities for our youth!

 ***On Wednesday, September 7th I will be the guest speaker at the College Republicans Club on the University of Tennessee campus in the Howard Baker Jr. Center. The program starts at  6:30. Everyone is welcome to attend. Bring your hashtags!




***I am on the Knox County Health Department's National Association of Counties Health Learning Challenge Committee. The NACo National Convention was in July in Long Beach, CA where we unveiled our group's video which I hosted. This committee is the recipient of a grant that made our work possible. I went to Long Beach and spoke before the committee as well as attending other informative meetings. In particular the session that concerned the mentally ill in our jails. No Knox County funds were used. Expenses were covered by the grant or I paid for them myself.

***Groundbreaking for the new Plumb Creek Park will be Wednesday, August 24th at 10am. I serve on the Knox County Parks and Recreation Board and am very excited to get this project started in the Ball Camp area. The address is 1517 Hickey Rd.

***Swearing in of the newly-elected Knox County Officials will be Thursday, September 1st at 9:00am in the Main Assembly Room at the City County Building. There is usually a brief reception immediately following the ceremony in the Small Assembly Room.

***The reorganization of Knox County Commission is tentatively set for Thursday, September 8th, but this has not been set in stone and may change. If it does happen it should be at 9:00am in the Main Assembly Room at the City County Building. This is when the Chairman and Vice-Chairman for the following 12 months will be elected. Also standing committee appointments will be made as well. A definite date will be set in the August work session.

***The annual Zoo Knoxville "Feast with the Beasts" event is this Saturday, August 13th from 7p-11p. Details and tickets can be found here: https://www.zooknoxville.org/event/feast-with-the-beast/

 ***Labor Day weekend will start early this year with the Thursday night football game between Tennessee and Appalachian State at Neyland Stadium. Game time is 7:00pm.

In Commission news...


On Monday, August 15th at 5:00pm, the Knox County Commission will hold its monthly workshop in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building.

On Monday, August 22nd at 1pm the Knox County Pension and Retirement Board will meet on the 6th floor of the City County Building in the Commission Conference Room. I am on that board and will be present. Also that day, the Knox County Commission Beer Board will meet at 4pm. The regular Commission will begin at 5pm followed by Zoning at 7pm. All meetings will take place in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building. At 4:30 there will a reception and show of appreciation for outgoing Commissioners Sam McKenzie, Amy Broyles, Jeff Ownby and Mike Brown.



The items that are coming before Commission for August include 11 school resolutions and 11 from Engineering and Public Works. There is one resolution for a TIF from KCDC and five zoning issues this month. Some that stand out are:
1. Consideration of an agreement with the Navy for the establishment of a ROTC program at West High School.
2. Consideration of school grants from the Tennessee Department of Education for over $400,000.
3. Consideration of approving contracts for resurfacing of roads in East and South Knox County at a cost of over $1.3M with 98% of the funding coming from TDOT.
4. Consideration of approval for tax increment financing in the redevelopment of the old Pryor Brown Garage by Dover development. This property is the first going through the approval process by an independent third party with expertise in this type of financing. They make an assessment of whether the property deserves any assistance for redevelopment and how much assistance is needed. This assists Commission in making decisions about a complicated issue.

Here's the July update for Knox County!

***On Tuesday, July 12th I have the honor of speaking at the Ft. City Republican Club. It starts at 7pm at the Shoney's on North Broadway. Come out and see me!

 
***We had a great afternoon of ice cream and conversation at the June Ed 7 Bob NIGHT OUT in Knox County at Bruster's in Rocky Hill. Due to the heat and so many people on family outings and vacations there will not be an Ed & Bob NIGHT OUT in July. But in August we may be coming to your neighborhood!

***What a great 4th of July! We started with the Farragut Parade...

And the grandkids pitched in, too!

Then we headed to the Powell Parade and Celebration...

***I am on the Knox County Health Department's National Association of Counties Health Learning Challenge Committee. The NACo National Convention is later this month in Long Beach, CA. We will present our ideas and a video on how to make Knox County more mobile and healthy at the convention. My part of the video was shot at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens.

***On July 1st the newest Knox County Disc Golf Course was opened at Powell Station Park.  The course was dedicated to the memory of Travis Wegener. Disc golf is fun for the entire family and with several courses across the county there is one near you!

***Monday,  July 11th the annual West Knoxville Republican Club's Picnic & Cake Auction starts at 5pm at Rothchild's, 8807 Kingston Pike. It's FREE so bring your friends and neighbors.  

***The Pat Summitt "Celebration of Life" will take place Thursday, July 14th beginning at 7pm at Thompson-Boling Arena. She was a tremendous inspiration to many people and will be missed.

***The Republican National Convention is a MUST SEE! It starts July 17th and runs through the 22nd.

In Commission news...


On Monday, July 18th at 5:00pm, the Knox County Commission will hold its monthly workshop in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building. Just prior to that there will be a Finance Committee meeting at 4p.

On Monday, July 25th at 1pm the Knox County Pension and Retirement Board will meet on the 6th floor of the City County Building in the Commission Conference Room. I am on that board and will be present. Also that day, the Knox County Commission Beer Board will meet at 4pm. The regular Commission will begin at 5pm followed by Zoning at 7pm. All meetings will take place in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building. 

In contrast to June the list of items before Commission this month is short. There are 22 school resolutions while Engineering and Public Works has 5. There are seven zoning issues this month. Some that stand out are:
1. Approving the purchase and installation of Bermuda grass, irrigation and fencing behind Northshore Elementary School funded by the PTA, 1st utility District, Sentinel Builders, Bryant Fence Company, Carolina Green Corporation and Concord Title. I love when a community comes together to make things happen!.
2. Approving a donation from Lift Life Foundation  for up to $150,000 in renovations and equipment for the Fulton High School weight room.
3. Approving a donation of $47,600 from the Pond Gap PTA for upgrades to their playground.
4. Approving a grant contract of 4562,833 between the Knox County Health Department and Tennessee Department of Health for Public health Emergency Awareness.

Here's the June update for Knox County!

***The Ed & Bob NIGHT OUT in Knox County for June will be Wednesday, June 22nd in Rocky Hill! Join us from 5p-7p at Bruster's Real Ice Cream, 7670 South Northshore Drive, 37919. Ed and I believe that going out to the people eases the strain on those who, because of work, commitments, financial situation or the distance to the City-County Building, cannot attend regular commission meetings. On Monday, June 18th at 5:00pm, the Knox County Commission will hold its monthly workshop in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building.

On Monday, June 25th at 1pm the Knox County Pension and Retirement Board will meet on the 6th floor of the City County Building in the Commission Conference Room. I am on that board and will be present. Also that day, the Knox County Commission Beer Board will meet earlier than usual (at 3pm) due to so many violations of selling to minors that will be brought forth. The regular Commission will begin at 5pm followed by Zoning at 7pm. All meetings will take place in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building. 

The list is long for items before the Commission this month. There are 89 items. Among them, schools have 24 items, Community Development has 17, Engineering and Public Works have 16. There are nine zoning issues and six items from the Health Department. Some that stand out are:
1. Approving the amended contract of the Board of Education Interim Superintendent Buzz Thomas.
2. A contract with Yellow Bus Transport Advisory for school bus driver training services.
3. Approving a Voluntary Pre-K grant of $2,014.200 from the State of Tennessee Department of Education with required matching funds of $1,158,027.
4. Resolution of acceptance of $8,180.40 of donated funds from the A. L. Lotts Elementary School for the installation of an Octaball Pit on the playground. Thanks parents!
5. Several resolutions to pay for changes of utilities as the county improves the intersection of Gleason Road and Ebenezer Road.
6. Resolutions regarding proposed changes in the fee structure charged builders by the Knox County Code Administration and Inspection Department. This was deferred from May.
7. Several resolutions regarding the approval of many Community Development Block Grants totaling over $780,000.
8. Resolution approving a grant of $130,000 from the U.S. EPA for Knox County's Air Monitoring Program.
9. Resolution approving funding of $5,000,000 over 5 years for the Zoo Knoxville.  I have seen the plans for the future of the zoo and I believe they are beneficial to Knox County and residents of east Knox County.
10. There will also be a discussion about the new Hardin Valley and Gibbs Middle Schools.

May Knox County Bus Driver Safety Awards announced

(Wednesday, May 18th, 2016) The 2nd monthly Knox County Bus Driver Safety Awards were held this morning at Ted Russell Ford, 8551 Kingston Pike.

The awards are sponsored by Ted Russell Ford and WIVK 107.7. The following Knox County bus drivers were recognized for their dedication to transporting our children to and from school each day:

1. Larry Mercier (1 yr service) - driving Copper Ridge Ele & Halls HS for Doug Davis Transportation
2. Darlene Boling (22 yrs service) - driving Sequoyah Ele & west HS for Boling Transportation
3. Martha Cowden (39 yrs service) - driving Powell Schools for Lynch Bus Lines
4. Jerry House (4 yrs service) - driving Farragut Primary & Middle for BLJ Bus Lines
5. Earl Atkinson (28 yrs service) - driving West View Ele for Burroughs Transportation

Collectively, these drivers have over 94 years of experience driving a school bus!

They each received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Knox County Schools and a $100 check from Andy White the owner of Ted Russell Ford. Congratulations drivers and job well done!

There are many great school bus drivers in Knox County and this is one small way we can show them our appreciation. This is the last award presentation for this school year. The awards will begin again in October. If you have any questions please contact me.

It's May and a LOT is going on in Knox County!

 ***It was my honor to serve as the host of the John J. Duncan, Sr. Senior Advacy Awards at Hunter Valley Farms on May 5th. The program put together by the Senior Citizens Information & Referral Service was outstanding. It was great to see my childhood friend and the awards namesake's daughter, Senator Becky Duncan Massey there to present the awards.  ***The second monthly Knox County School Bus Safety awards will be Wednesday, May 18th. Ted Russell Ford and WIVK are sponsoring the awards. The presentation will begin at 11:00am at Ted Russell Ford on Kingston Pike with five drivers who have been graded with excellent marks. Each will be presented a $100 check from Andy White the owner of Ted Russell Ford. 

***The Dogwood Arts Festival was a great success! I sit on the Board of the Dogwood Arts Festival and I am constantly impressed by the hard work of the seven staff members and the 100's of volunteers.

***The Annual Vestival South Knox Arts & Heritage Festival was Saturday, May 7th from 11a-7p at the Historic Candoro Marble Building in Vestal. There was live music, arts, dance, children's activities and lots of fun had by all! 

In Commission news...

On Monday, May 9th at 9:00am Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett will present his budget for the upcoming fiscal year. It will be in the Main Assembly Room at the City County Building before Knox County Commission and any public that would like to attend.

On Monday, May 16th at 4:00pm, the Knox County Commission will hold a workshop on the Mayor's budget. This will take place in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building. At 5:00pm the normal monthly workshop will take place followed by a public hearing on the Mayor's budget at 6:30pm. All citizens are urged to attend to voice their concerns.

On Monday, May 23rd at 1pm the Knox County Pension and Retirement Board will meet on the 6th floor of the City County Building in the Commission Conference Room. I am on that board and will be present. Also on May 23rd, the Knox County Commission will meet beginning at 4pm with the Beer Board, regular Commission at 5pm followed by Zoning at 7pm. All meetings will take place in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building. 

Among items of interest being considered this month:
1. Top of the list is the discussion of Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett's budget.

2. Various Knox County Schools' funding resolutions totaling over $35M. These items can be questioned, but all items from the KC School Board do not have to pass Commission to be approved. By law it is just a formality.

3. Resolution approving the acceptance of $27,962.80 from the Rocky Hill PTO for purchase and installation of sod and new playground equipment. Thank you parents!

4. Resolution of acceptance of a construction contract for improvements at Gleason Road and Ebenezer Road. 
5. Resolution of acceptance of a construction contract for sidewalk improvements at Powell Middle School.
6. Resolution of acceptance of a survey and design project construction contract for improvements at Canton Hollow Road.
7. Resolution approving a Grant Contract between State of TN, Department of Health and the Knox County Government for TennCare Kids Outreach Services in the amount of $1,052,900.

In zoning after the 30 day delay of a sector plan amendment and zoning change by Dr. Kerri Bentley the item will be back on the agenda. This was delayed to give time for all concerned to discuss the various issues that were raised last month. I am sure we will again discuss this in great length, but I have no desire to approve changes in community zoning when the residents don't want the changes.

April's Knox County Schools Bus Driver Safety Awards announced

This morning a great crowd turned out for the first monthly winners of the Knox County School Bus Driver Safety Awards.

 

 

 

 

 

The April winners are:

1. Regina Patterson, Pond Gap Ele. driving for 12 years
2. Ricky Denton, Spring Hill Ele. driving for 2 years
3. Esther McGinnis, Sunnyview & Chilhowee Ele; Carter MS & HS driving for 34 years
4. David Ray, Cedar Bluff Ele. driving for 2 years
5. Rhonda Galyon, Sequoyah Ele. & West HS driving for 14 years

 

Each driver received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Knox County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Jim McIntyre and a $100 check from Andy White, owner of Ted Russell Ford.
